Birding in
Jeff Davis Parish

A FESTIVAL LIKE NO OTHER

Registration opens August 1, 2018.

Birding festival held all throughout the farms and prairies of Jeff Davis Parish. Honoring the elusive ‘Yellow Rail’, which is flushed out of second crop rice. Festival organizers have escorted trips around the Parish. Hotel block will be at the Hampton Inn in Jennings, LA. Visit their website for more info.

The Yellow Rails & Rice Festival is designed with fun in mind, and the primary goals are to provide participants with a unique venue to see Yellow Rails and, at the same time, bring birders and farmers together to emphasize the value to birds of the area’s “Working wetlands.”

Water-based agriculture and rice/crawfish cultivation, are a few reasons why Jeff Davis Parish offers excellent year round birding opportunities.

From agricultural areas to fresh water marshes, bottomland hardwoods and scenic cypress-lined bayous and rivers, Jeff Davis Parish offers a great diversity of species, whether you are exploring the area on your own or attending the YRARF during late fall (a combined 300+ species have been tallied during the festival’s first five years).

The area is also particularly well known for spectacular aggregations of waterfowl and wading birds.
