To assure that new and expanding businesses have a continuing pool of workers with the level of education and expertise required for their operations, area colleges and universities, vocational/technical schools and high schools all train entry-level personnel on a year-round basis. Schools at all levels are augmenting their general educational curriculum with programs explicitly designed to meet employment possibilities.
Community colleges are increasing their industry-specific training, and colleges and universities are developing partnerships with industry that involve human needs as well as technological development.
There are two 4-year universities and two 2-year community colleges within an hour's drive of most of Jefferson Davis Parish. Doctoral degrees are available in the arts, sciences, engineering, medical, and legal fields.

Jennings, Morgan Smith Instructional Site
Since 1938, SOWELA has served the people of Southwest Louisiana with higher education and training opportunities. The College offers higher education and training opportunities through its main campus in Lake Charles and the Morgan Smith Instructional Site in Jennings. Originally, the College was established to prepare individuals for a specific vocation through technical training. Today, however, SOWELA is a comprehensive technical community college that offers students a holistic higher education experience from professionally trained professors through state-of-the-art facilities and numerous student-led organizations and internship opportunities.
